This is the Startup Index series, an ongoing effort to measure the momentum of startup companies using external signals. It is calculated based on weighted factors such as web traffic, social media share of voice, inbound links, etc. I usually add some music, to make cruising a spreadsheet a little more fun. Enjoy!
We last published the New York index in May 2013, listing over 500 companies based on a very early version of what would become the Mattermark Score and later break out into the Growth Score and Mindshare Score. This new list ranks the 100 companies showing the strongest signals of growth in the New York Metro Region. To dig deeper, you can login to your Mattermark account (or sign up for a free 14 day trial) an explore out entire database of companies, signals, industry verticals, funding rounds and more.

After making these lists based on scores, you can see they reinforce how the New York startup scene is often described: heavy on media and advertising, skewed toward consumer products and businesses that benefit from direct access to brands in the heart of New York. To mix it up, I’ve also created a list of the top B2B startups, and excluded advertising technology from the list.

I hope you enjoyed exploring these lists, with some of the “usual suspects” as well as some surprises. The New York startup community is growing very fast right now, second only to the Bay Area for its volume of startup funding and new company creation.
We look forward to publishing more insights on this dynamic community of entrepreneurs, and encourage you to sign up for a free 14 day trial of Mattermark to explore the best companies to work for, invest in, sell to and cheer for as they continue to grow. We can’t wait to see what New York founders build next!
